Benitez resigns as Liverpool boss

Rafael Benitez today shocked fans all over the world by resigning as manager of Liverpool Football Club. After Liverpool’s extremely 2008/09 campaign many were tipping the Red’s to claim their first Premier League title and that Benitez was the right man for the job.

Benitez’s resignation has angered a large amount of Liverpool fans who blame the current owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks. However, the American owners have come out with this statement today.

“Liverpool Football Club would like to thank Mr. Benitez for his extremely successful five years at the club. It was entirely Mr. Benitez’s decision to resign and we accept that decision fully. We will start our search for a new manager on Monday morning and will definitely be hoping to have the new man in place before the start of pre season.”

Rafael Benitez was appointed manager of Liverpool in 2004. He instantly gained hero status as he guided Liverpool to the name of 'Champions of Europe', staging a remarkable comeback in Istanbul against the Italian giants, AC Milan. The following season saw the club lift the prestigious FA cup after beating West Ham in a nail biting penalty shootout.

Benitez then managed his second Champions League Final as Liverpool boss in 2007 when they again faced AC Milan. This time Milan ran out 2-0 winners.

Since the 2007 Champions League Final Liverpool have not managed to win any major competitions. In the 2008/09 season Liverpool finished in 2nd place, four points behind rivals Manchester United. This excited many Liverpool fans into thinking that the 2009/10 campaign will be an extremely successful one however; they now need a new manager to lead them to that glory.
